Abstract

In the trial culture of Malachra fasciata Jack., a common weed knoen in Tagalof as “Sipit-ulang” or “Paang-baliwis” the distance of planting had no influence on either the length of stem or yield and tensile strength of the fiber, However, as the plant grew older, there was a corresponding increase in the length of stem, percentage of fiber extraction, and tensile strength. The yield of dry fiber was not affected by the time of harvesting.

This plant was found to be resistant to plant diseases. Only the stemborer, Earias fabia Stall, was found to attack Malachra, but the damage done was negligible.
