Abstract

The extent of varieties of morpho-agronomic characters of more Deltapine and UPL-C2 cotton varieties were evaluated under two moisture and fertilizer levels. In addition, the relationships of certain characters were established using simple linear correlation analyses. Results showed that a high degree of variability was present among varieties with respect to number of days to boll opening, weight per boll, plant height, internode length and dry matter yield.

A detailed analysis of plants harvested from variant Deltapine 16 and from normal counterparts did not indicate significant differences studied.

The fertilizer treatment did not produce significant variation in the morpho-agronomic characters studied except for number of bolls per plant. Moisture level produced significant differences in number of days to boll opening, root length, plant height, and internode length, these plant characters decreased as the moisture level was reduced.

There was significant interaction between fertilizer and variety in number of days to boll opening, weight per boll, and plant height during the first week of observation, However, moisture a variety interaction was not substantial in the morpho-agronomic characters evaluated. Likewise, no fertilizer x moisture x variety interactions were observed.

Simple linear correlation analyses showed significant positive correlation between number of days to boll opening and number of days to flowering, seed cotton yield and number of bolls per plant. Plant height was significantly and positively correlated with root length, stem with seed cotton yield.

The highly variable plant indices evaluated in this study may be used as a guide in cotton breeding programs.
