Abstract
The yield increased as the population was doubled. (I18 x I80) (A102 x A106) yielded 131.5 cavans per hectare at 1 x .5 meter spacing and 75.1 cavans per hectare at 1 x 1 meter spacing. College Yellow produced only 92.6 cavans and 51.0 cavans at 1 x .5 m. and 1 x 1 m. spacings, respectively. Hybrid (L315 x L314) (A200 x A204) gave the highest yield of 68.4 cavans at 1 x 1 m and 47.8 cavans at 1 x.5 m. spacing among the white entries. College White produced only 17.0 cavans at 1 x 1 m. distance 27.7 cavans at 1 x .05 m. distance. In general the hybrids had higher yield than the varieties at both plant population densities.
Ear length and number of ears per stalk decreased as the population was increased. The yellow hybrids produced more ears per stalk than the varieties, but the white varieties produced more ears than the hybrids. However, no white entry averaged more than one ear. The hybrids produced longer ears than the varieties in both plant population levels.
