Abstract

Thirty varieties of sugarcane were used in the field and greenhouse tests to determine the susceptibility of resistance of sugarcane to smut caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Rabh.) Syd.

In the field test, the varieties B41-227, B43-211, CP34-78, CP36-111, CP36-116, CP43-47, CL50-11, CP52-1 and CL41-70 were found to be very highly resistant whereas, B34-49 BH1012 and CP36-183 were found to be moderately susceptible. In the greenhouse test, the varieties B41-27, B41-391, B43-211, B43-337, CP43-78, CP36-111, CP36-116, CP43-47, CL50-11, CP52-1, and CL41-70 were found to be very highly resistant whereas, CP36-183 was found to be very highly susceptible. Varietal differences were statistically significant at the 10% probability level on both tests.

The greenhouse test had the higher percentage of infection than the field test. The varieties with average reaction in the greenhouse showed either very highly resistant in the field.
