Abstract

The biophysical, economic and socio-political restraints influencing the agroecosystems of the Dojoc Balite Resettlement Area in Botolan, Zambales was documented and assessed to provide some appropriate strategies for the agricultural development of the area. A total of twenty days was spent in the area to enable interviews with key informants, transects and mapping and to apply some data collection techniques allied to Participatory Rural Appraisal System.

The resettlement area is managed by the Santa Monica Social Action and Development Center. Members of the resettlement came from five barangays of Botolan, Zambales. The community has a total area of fourteen hectares, approximately 40 percent of which is devoted to several agricultural activities. By the year 1997, the community is projected to be a fully functional cooperative. Present agricultural production in the area is limited by poor soil conditions, long dry season and a short wet season, the absence of supplementary irrigation systems and the lack of livestock and planting materials of settler-preferred crops. Therefore, stability of food production in the area is low.

Technological interventions and other development programs that could improve the productivity, stability and sustainability of the resettlement area were proposed. These recommendations were grouped into short, medium, long-term programs based on its relationships with current and plans in the area. These recommendations must be done with urgency and purpose by the settlers in coordination with the Santa Monica Social Action and Development Center.
