Abstract

The ratoon performance of eight inter specific hybrids of Saccharum officinarum and Saccahrum spontaneum and three foreign varieties was evaluated at the Department of Agronomy and Institute of Plant Breeding, UP at Los Baños, College, Laguna. Two commercially grown local varieties, Phil 56-226 and Phil 66-07, were used as standard checks.

Highly significant differences among entries were obtained for characters associated with tonnage except for germination percentage. The entries did not differ significantly in sugar yield components, except brix and tonnage.

Of the foreign varieties evaluated, F 148 and Dacca 2 performed better than HQ 409 and were comparable to the check varieties. Among the hybrids, S72-X-A was found to have the best ratoon. S72-X-4 and S72-X-6 were similar to HQ 409 and check varieties in most of the yield components evaluated. All the hybrids appeared to have better performance in the ratoon than in the plant crop in terms of stalk length, stalk diameter and number of millable stalks. This superiority was reflected in the tonnage. Yield components such as stalks length and number of millable stalks, therefore, could be increased or improved by hybridation of the noble canes with Saccharum spontaneum.
