Abstract

Phonological patterns of Tagalog and Cebuano languages are established and compared utilizing representative texts of the languages. Consonants sound sequence and syllable sound sequence frequency matrices, a modification on Trubetzkoy's occurence matrices were constructed to characterize the languages. The sounds N. NG, and the sounds of the significant vowels were found to be with the maximum percentage of occurrence while R and W are the sounds with the least percentage of occurence for both languages. The syllable pair V-V (vowel-vowel ) has the least percentage of occurrence for Cebuano while for Tagalog, the pair V-VC (vowel-vowel consonant) was found to be least frequently used.
