Abstract

Debate and group discussion are two communication process used in issue resolution. They have been used in different legislative, judicial, and academic purposes in resolving different forms of conflict. In this study, thirty Speech Communication (SPCM 1) students were grouped into four. They were recorded debating and discussing on the same topic (should new freshmen be allowed to join organizations or not) to provide a content analysis on the process of issue resolution for debate and discussion. According to Eugene Chenoweth and his debate-discussion continuum, the two processes have similarities and differences from one another. The researcher used this as the main framework in comparing and analyzing the process of issue resolution for both models using Conversation Analysis. Preliminary interpretations were done using the Speech Act theory, Monroe's Motivated Sequence for debate, and Bulan's and De Leon's Discussion Format for discussion. The study classified how speech acts are used in different parts of both the debate and discussion and how their placement reflects the purpose and nature of the two communication processes in issue resolution. The main speech acts used, assertive and directives, analyzed the similarities and differences of debate and discussion using Chenowth's model. The analysis of the speech acts reflected how debate has a more structured format of issue resolution due to its persuasive nature and the different role fulfillments, and how the small group discussion has a more conversational form of interaction.
