Abstract

The process of scheduling nursing personnel can be divided into three stages - (1) determination of the required number of personnel at each hour of the day, (2) determination on the required number of nursing personnel that should be assigned to each shift type to satisfy the hourly demand, and (3) assigning off days and shift schedule to each personnel. Using queueing theory, linear programming and modular approach in stages (1), (2) and (3) respectively, a schedule satisfying the constraints that include an off day each week, different staffing demands for each type of shift and a shift rotation was created.
