Abstract
The paper was made to enumerate some of the mathematical concepts used in the study of the field of epidemiology, a science which deals with the study of epidemics. Some mathematical concepts used in the formulation of models in epidemics were gathered and classified. Some of the mathematical concepts in the models are logistic equations, derivatives, definite integral equations, convolution integral, derivative test, limits, and the intermediate value theorem. Mathematical models were presented. They are of two types: the simple deterministic model which is also termed as the susceptible-infected (SI) model and the general deterministic model , in particular the SIR model. Lastly, models for AIDS, malaria, and gonorrhea were presented. The importance of mathematics in the formulation of epidemic models was given emphasis and it is hoped that this paper convey the impression that mathematics does provide a sufficient basis by which other fields of science could be investigated.
