Strategies and challenges of mangrove restoration in the Philippines

Abstract

This paper presents a compilation of information from twenty (20) mangrove plantation assessment and monitoring studies covering five (5) islands, nine (9) provinces and seventeen (17) municipalities in the Philippines from 2001 to 2014. Of the 20 mangrove plantations studied, all except one area used the common and dominant Rhizophora spp. for planting. The Rhizophora spp. were planted in areas where they never existed before, in exposed coastlines with sandy substrate. Only two plantation sites recorded a survival rate of more than 20%. This nationwide practice of planting the highly favoured Rhizophora species in unsuitable intertidal flats continues to endanger not only the threatened mangrove species but other marine life as well. A new mangrove planting guidelines is necessary to enhance the survival rate of the mangrove species.
