Streptococcal meningitis and arthritis in a Philippine pig (Sus scrofa domestica)
Issue Date

Abstract
Septicemic porcine streptococcal infection is an emerging zoonosis with a published report of human meningeal infection following consumption of raw or undercooked pork following travel to the Philippines. Streptococcal sepsis showing suppurative arthritis and meningitis was clinicopathologically characterized following isolation of Streptococcus species from the knee joints, lymph nodes, liver and meninges of affected pig. This study documented streptococcal meningitis and arthritis in a pig in Northern Samar, Philippines. Streptococcal sepsis is suggested to be regularly included in the differential diagnoses of clinical encounters of arthritides and meningitides in pigs.
