Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the experiences of the farmers in the implementation of the Location-Specific Technology Development (LSTD) Project to attain the country's rice self-sufficiency. The LSTD Project was found effective in technology transfer process as manifested by the adoption of the technology by the farmer-participants. All the interventions under the components of the program were proven effective in enhancing the farmers' knowledge and skills and in increasing farmer's productivity and income, making it an effective strategy in the development of location-specific technology packages appropriate in the area. Farmers' active participation contributed to the success of the program especially in the season-long training in rice production and establishment of the technology demonstration farms that enhanced their learnings on rice science and technology, and developed their skills in decision-making on the different crop management system. As an outcome of their participation in the program, the farmers was empowered and formed into a farmer-cooperative that helped sustained the project activities especially the technology utilization. In general, the technology promotion model and strategies were proven effective and efficient in developing, adopting and promoting suitable location-specific technologies for high yield rice production. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2012.
