Leaf architectural patterns in twenty five cultivars of bougainvillaea spectabilis willd. (Nyctaginaceae) in the Philippines

Abstract
Twenty five cultivars of Bougainvillaea spectabilis Willd. (Nyctaginaceae), collected from Bay, Laguna, Philippines were studied for their leaf architectural patterns. Specifically, the study aimed to use the leaf architectural characters in documenting the diversity among the cultivars of B. spectabilis and to investigate the importance of leaf architectural pattern in the intraspecific classification of B. spectabilis. A dendrogram was generated to resolve the clusters in the 25 cultivars of B. spectabilis. A total of 15 clusters were identified of which nine are single-cultivar clusters considered here as unique cultivars while six cultivars appeared in clusters denoting similarity in leaf patterns. The generation of 15 clusters indicates that the leaf architectural pattern can be used to distinguish a cultivar of B. spectabilis from other cultivars. A dichotomous key is presented here for the 25cultivars of B. spectabilis included in this study. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2011.
