Are the standard conditions for genebank drying optimal for rice seed quality?

Abstract

Freshly harvested seeds of ten genebank accessions of rice (Oyza sativa L.) were dried by either immediately placing them in the genebank dryroom (15% RH, 15°C) or by placing them in a batch dryer (air heated to 45-50°C) for 4 d before transferring the seeds to the dryroom. Monitoring the eRH during the first 4 d of drying showed that moisture loss was more rapid using the batch dryer. Controlled deterioration tests were carried out after seed cleaning, in which seeds at approximately 24% moisture content were placed at 45°C and sampled after 24, 48, and 72 h for germination testing. For seeds of eight of the ten accessions, there was greater germination of seeds that had been initially dried using the batch dryer rather than the genebank dryroom. For good seed quality, including longevity during long-term genebank storage, it may be important to initially dry rice seeds at a higher temperature than that recommended in the genebank standards.
