Effects of mycotoxin-deactivating agent on the growth performance of pigs fed ochratoxin and zearalenone-contaminated diets

Abstract

Forty-eight weanling pigs were used in a feeding trial to determine the effect of different levels of mycotoxin-deactivating agent (MDA; Mycofixreg; Plus) on the growth performance of pigs fed diets contaminated with 500 ppb ochratoxin A (OTA) and 250 ppb zearalenone (ZEN). Weanling pigs were randomly assigned to six treatments: T1-basal diet; T2-basal diet + 0.20% MDA; T3-basal diet + OTA and ZEN; T4, T5 and T6-basal diet + OTA and ZEN with 0.05, 0.10 and 0.20% MDA, respectively. Each treatment was replicated eight times. Pigs fed the OTA and ZEN-contaminated diets without MDA had the lowest ADG and poorest FCR. The growth performance of pigs fed OTA and ZEN-contaminated diets was significantly improved by the addition of 0.20% MDA, and was statistically similar to that of pigs fed the negative control diets with or without MDA, particularly during the starter period. The FCR of pigs was likewise improved when fed OTA and ZEN-contaminated diet with 0.05 or 0.10% MDA. The addition of MDA to the mycotoxins-contaminated diet failed to significantly influence the FCR of the growing pigs. None of the prepubertal and growing gilts fed the OTA and ZEN-contaminated diets with or without MDA developed vulvovaginal during the feeding trial. However gilts fed OTA and ZEN-contaminated diets without MDA had small ovaries and underdeveloped uterus; histologically, they showed lesions of ovarian atrophy and regression of endometrial growth. None of these gross and microscopic changes were seen in the reproductive organs of gilts fed the negative control diets and OTA and ZEN-contaminated diets with 0.10 or 0.20% MDA. Nephrotoxicosis was observed in pigs fed the OTA and ZEN- contaminated diets with 0.05% MDA and without MDA. In conclusion, results indicate that addition of 0.20% MDA to OTA and ZEN-contaminated diets improved the ADG and FCR of young pigs. Gilts had histologically normal reproductive organs.
