Pili pulp: Potential value
Issue Date

Abstract
Pili (Canarium ovatum) can be a major crop export that would compete well on the global nut market. The tree is abundant in the Philippines and methods for extracting oil from pili has been developed that is environmentally friendly. An aqueous extraction involving mechanical and enzymatic degradation of the cell walls of the oil-containing material frees the oil. The extraction is divided into three operations, including a pretreatment, extraction or oil release and oil recovery. Experiments show that an oil recovery of 84.2% is possible compared with that obtained by solvent extraction. The chemical and physical properties of pili pulp oil are similar to those of olive oil as well as the iodine and saponification numbers of the oils. However, the free fatty acid content in pili pulp oil is higher than that of olive oil.
