Abstract

The study was conducted to analyze the communication environment in the generation and utilization of furniture and handicraft technologies in Region II, Philippines. Specifically, it aimed to 1. characterize the actors involved in the knowledge utilization system of the Forest Products Research and Development Institute's (FPRDI's) furniture and handicraft technologies; 2. determine the communication behavior of the actors; 3. determine the nature and flow of interaction among and between the actors; 4. determine the research and information needs of the user groups (UGs) and 5. analyze the factors that affect the utilization of the furniture and handicraft technologies. Generally, there was a "high" intra-communication level among the actors. The FPRDI staff had the highest level (weighted mean of 3.78), followed by the Department of Science and Technology's Provincial Science and Technology Center Officers (DOST-PSTCOs, 3.50) and the UGs (3.28). Inter-communication however, was "low" to "moderate". But while the respondents have "high" intra-communication level, only some initiated the communication themselves. Even if there was "low" to "moderate" inter-communication among the respondents, the FPRDI staff and the PSTCOs were relatively aware of the UGs research needs. Putting-up a stable cooperative was the most expressed information need by the UGs (23%). This could have stemmed from their organization-related conflicts. The PSTCOs' sex, income and linkage with other government and non-government organizations were significantly related to communication level with their colleagues. Similarly, the UGs income, sex and linkages were significantly related to their communication level with the PSTCOs and FPRDI staff.
