Performance of recycled hybrid rice [Oryza sativa L. cv. PSB Rc 72H (Mestizo 1)] under two levels of nitrogen
Abstract
The F1 hybrid and two advanced generations (F2 and F3) of a hybrid rice variety, PSB Rc 72H (Mestizo 1), were grown under two levels of nitrogen (50 kg N ha-1 and 100 kg N ha -1) during the wet season of 2005 at the experimental lowland farm of the University of the Philippines Los Baños. The treatments were laid out using factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Regardless of generation, plants fertilized with 100 kg N ha-1 were significantly taller, reached 50% heading earlier and had longer panicles than those fertilized with 50 kg N ha-1. The F 2 generation was significantly shorter than the F1 hybrid, approached 50% heading later by more than one day, and had lower 1000-grain weight. However, the F1 hybrid had statistically the same number of tillers and panicles per plant, length of panicle, number of spikelets per plant, number of filled spikelets per plant, harvest index and grain yield as the F2 generation. The F3 generation was as tall as the F1 hybrid, had also statistically the same number of tillers and panicles per plant, length of panicle, number of spikelets and filled spikelets per panicle as the F1 hybrid. The F3 generation reached 50% heading significantly later by more than two days, and had significantly lower 1000-grain weight, harvest index and grain yield than the F1 hybrid. The number of filled spikelets per panicle, 1000-grain weight and harvest index were closely associated with grain yield. The F2 generation of PSB Rc 72H (Mestizo 1) might be recycled but the F3 generation is definitely non-recyclable. Increasing the N level did not alleviate yield depression.
