Development of an integrated pest management program for mango in Palawan, Philippines

Issue Date

Abstract

An integrated pest management (IPM) program for mango specific for Palawan was developed to address in particular the management of the key pest mango pulp weevil. Through focused group discussions, baseline information was gathered on production practices with emphasis on pest management strategies. Other problems include leafhoppers, anthracnose and scab. The IPM program developed involved the use of control strategies, namely, cultural methods (open-center pruning and sanitation), pest monitoring and chemical control. This program resulted in the reduction in the number of sprayings from 24 to 7 and a significant reduction of 40% to 0% in mango pulp weevil infestation in fruits. Yield was likewise increased. A net benefit of Php1890.00 per mango tree, or a marginal benefit cost ratio of 6.14, was achieved when IPM was practiced. The effect of sunlight exposure to weevil mortality was also determined and it was found that a 10-min exposure at 1000, 1200 and 1400 h resulted in 100% mortality.
