Molecular mapping of resistance to thrips in potato
Issue Date

Abstract
The paper reports the first successful mapping of genes controlling resistance to thrips in potato. Analysis of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for thrips feeding, oviposition and leaf damage resistance to thrips (Thrips palmi and Megalurothrips usitatus) was performed on two reciprocal backcross (BCB and BCT) progenies of Solanum tuberosum (USW 2230) x Solanum berthaultii (PI 473331). Two QTLs were detected in the two mapping populations. One QTL was located on chromosome 1 in the BCT and another QTL was mapped on chromosome 8 in the BCB. The QTL on chromosome 8 was consistently identified for all parameters used to evaluate thrips resistance reaction. The QTLs accounted for about 10% to 27% of the variation observed in resistance. None of the QTLs identified for resistance to thrips was associated with any of the trichome traits. Rather, both QTLs coincided with those located for resistance to the Colorado potato beetle, which were mapped for glycoalkaloid accumulation. Additional RAPD markers were also mapped and one was found linked to the QTL on chromosome 1.
