Wood density of tropical tree species in the philippines: State of knowledge and database development for tree biomass estimation

Issue Date

7-2005

Abstract

The state of knowledge and database was developed for tree biomass estimation for determining the wood density of tropical tree species in the Philippines. Wood density is a measure of the amount of cell wall substance per unit volume of wood. It is an important index for estimating the strength and mechanical properties of wood to determine its suitability for various uses. Variations in wood density values within and between tree species and sites exist as a result of the varying needs for structural support under different circumstances. The wood density database is written in Microsoft access 2000 and contains linked tables pertaining to botanical taxonomic classification, location and site characteristics.
