Abstract
The early developmental stages of five of 37 families of fish obtained from plankton samples collected with a neuston net off San Pedro Bay, Leyte, Philippines are described and illustrated with special reference to morphological transformation, fin development and pigmentation. These are the Atherinidae, Callionymidae, Clupeidae, Mugilidae and Sciaenidae. Their English and local names and their distribution in the Philippines and San Pedro Bay are included. This is the first of a series of papers on the early developmental morphology of marine fishes caught in Philippine waters.
