Improving small farming communities with milk production and processing technologies

Abstract

This pilot project involved scientists and marginal farmers working together for technology generation and adoption in backyard milk production and processing. It was designed to give small corn-based farming communities direct contact with scientists so as to develop their technical capabilities and improve their quality of life. The project also retrained extension workers in order to improve their services. It was implemented in Colawin, Argao, Cebu, a mountain village where poor people, who grow and eat corn, had never tasted nor produced fresh milk before. Guided by the scientists, the farmers conducted experiments and decided which technologies were suitable for adoption on their own farms. Twenty two (22) cows produced 28 calves and more than enough milk for family consumption. Surplus milk was sold and made white cheese, and other products. Artificial insemination (Al) services were provided by volunteer trained farmers. Over a hundred farmers have benefited from this project through added income and improved health.
