Cytogenetics of the golden snail [Pomacea canaliculata (D' Orb)]

Abstract

Lacto-aceto-orcein (2%) macerations of Carnoy's fixed testes of golden snails [Pomacea canaliculata (D' Orb)] disclosed the spermatogenetic cells and chromosomes. Four interphase nuclei with varying sizes and chromatin features were observed. Relative length of pachytene chromosomes ranged from 0.059 to 0.112. Diakinetic chromosome counts ranged from 6 to 15. The meiotic index was 59.2%. Meiosis was normal consisting of reductional and equational divisions. There are at least 6 sequential stages of gametogenesis or the maturation of the secondary spermatocytes to spermatids and ultimately to sperm cells.
