Soil bacteria as potential biocontrol agents against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne spp.

Abstract

Two hundred-seventeen spore-forming bacterial isolates were obtained from soil samples from various locations in Los Baños, Laguna, the Philippines. Of the total, 56 have shown nematicidal effects in in vitro screening. Fifteen of these isolates were also effective in further greenhouse and field trials. The isolates that showed the most promise were A10b, B3 and B13, SFE, BPI 12, BPI 22 and IR 5. Five of these have been identified to be Bacillus belonging to the following species: B. cereus (BPI 12, BPI 22 and B3), B. circulans (IR 5) and B. stearothermophilus (SFE). Among the outstanding performers were B. cereus (isolates BPI 12, BPI 22 and B3). Four materials - sawdust, rice hull, compost and volcanic ash - were found to be effective carriers for BPI 12 and BPI 22 in greenhouse tests using infected soil. Isolate BPI 22 was able to induce higher yield of large tubers of potatoes in exploratory field investigations in Benguet.
