Note: Detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in raw beef and pork
Abstract
Studies on the detection, enumeration and isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in fresh 8 beef samples and 8 pork samples from 2 Laguna public markets were conducted. Samples were subjected to isolation using PRSA and presumptive positive isolates were subjected to biochemical and physiological tests. Samples for enumeration, however, prior to isolation were enriched in mEC+n. Results showed that from a total of 1629 colonies isolated from samples subjected to enumeration and 1740 isolates subjected to enrichment step, only one was presumptive positive for E. coli O157:H7. Serological testing using Reveal® (Neogen Corporation, Lansing, MI) for E. coli O157:H7, however, yielded negative result. This indicates that E. coli O157:H7 was not detected in the samples analyzed.
