Note: Promoting popular awareness, understanding and appreciation of biodiversity and biotechnology

Abstract

This study sought to create greater awareness of the concepts of biodiversity and biotechnology among the public. Its heterogeneous audience included those from the grassroots, non-government organizations and media who have relatively little knowledge level of the concepts. Workshops were held in various parts of the country to initiate a multiplier effect of information dissemination. Participants committed their participation in public awareness activities, that is, integration of concepts in instruction, training, and focus group sessions. Support communication materials in the form of videos in Filipino and English; and primers in Filipino, English and Cebuano were produced to supplement the technical inputs in the workshops. Public involvement or the use of participatory approach in information dissemination improved relations between the public and research and development (R and D) institutions, as well as generated stakeholder support for research endeavors. This was made possible through increased scientific literacy and a perceived application of concepts in people's lives. A clear understanding of concepts led to greater appreciation and involvement among different sectors. With value added to information, people were empowered with alternatives and options necessary for decision-making.
