Cytogenetics of corn earworm (Helicoverpa armigera Hbn.)
Abstract
Cytogenetic analysis of Helicoverpa armigera Hbn. using lactoacetoorcein squash technique of testes at prepupa revealed distinct qualitative and quantitative cytological and karyomorphological features. The haploid number as well as the chromosome number of the spermatocytes of H. armigera Hbn. was n=31. Male H. armigera was also found to be homogametic, 2n=62 (30II + ZZ). Meiotic index ranged from 95-100%. The chromosome length ranged from 0.010 to 0.023. Meiosis in H. armigera was generally normal with few cell counts exhibiting early disjunction at prophase I and asynchronous behavior at prophase II, metaphase II and anaphase II.
