Productivity analysis of upland corn systems: The case of Lantapan, Bukidnon, Philippines

Abstract

Sixty-four (64) sample farmers from Lantapan, Bukidnon were surveyed to determine technology used in corn production in the uplands. Results showed that 55% of the respondents used traditional varieties and the rest used the modern varieties (HYVs). Higher levels of fertilizer and pesticide input use were observed with those planting HYVs. Results of the production function using the HYV technology showed that fertilizer use (nitrogen and potassium), and hired labor were significant in explaining output growth. Farmers using traditional varieties depend on farm size and hired labor as significant sources of productivity growth. Farmers were found to be constrained financially to adopt new technologies. Profitability analysis showed that accounting for non-cash family labor, those planting HYVs had a higher benefit-cost ratio (BCR) than those planting traditional varieties. To promote higher corn productivity in the uplands, we need to relax the cash constraints of farmers.
