Note : Cytological effects of water samples from Laguna Lake on root tips of onion (Allium cepa L.)
Abstract
Cytological effects of water samples from three different sites of Laguna Lake on root tips of onion, Allium cepa L., were determined. Acetocarmine squash preparations of the meristematic root tip cells showed that the cells increased in size due to polyploidization, chromosome enlargement, and chromosome elongation. Mitotic index was significantly low. Chromosome migration was misoriented and ribbon-like chromosomes were formed. Results indicate that the deteriorating water quality of Laguna Lake had adverse cytotoxic effects on root tip cells of A. cepa.
