Carotenoids in certain species of lichen from tropical region
Abstract
Column and thin‐layer chromatography revealed the presence of the following carotenoids in the thalli of 44 lichen species from tropical region Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Philippines: α carotene, β‐carotene, β‐cryptoxanthin, lutein, 3′‐epilutein, zeaxanthin, lutein epoxide, antheraxanthin, hy‐droxyechinenone, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, violaxanthin, neoxanthin, mutatoxanthin, rhodoxanthin, capsochrome, apo‐6′‐lycopenal, β‐citraurin and apo‐12′‐violaxanthal. The total content of carotenoids ranged from 20.76 (Cladonia froticulosa) to 101.32 μg g−1 dry wt (Parmotrema chinense). Copyright © 1994 Wiley‐VCH
