Methane production from hydrogen and carbon dioxide and monoxide in a column bioreactor of thermophilic methanogens by gas recirculation

Abstract

A column bioreactor, which had 300 ml of gas space and 200 ml of media and supportors, was used for methane production by thermophilic enriched methanogens and gas recirculation. As supportors, cristobalite PQ 10 was useful, and cell concentrations in the column were kept at 5.54 g/l. Rates of hydrogen consumption and methane production were 1380 mmol/l·d and 300 mmol/l·d, respectively at a gas recirculation speed of 18 l/h at 55°C, pH 7.4. For the gas mixture, nitrogen and carbon dioxide and monoxide, the consumption rate of carbon monoxide and the methane production rate were 480 mmol/l·d and 120 mmol/l·d, respectively at the gas recirculation speed of 18 l/h. © 1989.
