A study of some pesticide residues in fish in a Philippine village

Abstract

The following study was done for the purpose of determining the presence of pesticide residues in fish in an agricultural village with fish-ponds serving as an additional source of livelihood. Fish samples were collected and analyzed by using gas chromatographic techniques to detect some commonly-used pesticides (butyl-phenyl methyl carbamate, chlorpyrifos and benzoepin) in the village. No residue of pesticide was found. The pesticides studied and the possible consequences of chronic exposure were discussed. Further studies on pesticides and their effects must be pursued and monitored.
