Formation of pollen embryos in cultured anthers of coconut (Cocos nucifera L.)

Abstract

Various stages in the process of embryogenesis were observed in cultured anthers of Cocos nucifera L. The development of microspore-derived embryos started with the symmetrical mitotic division of pollen nucleus leading to the formation of globular, heart-shaped and torpedo embryos. Microspores at the stage just before, during or immediately after the first pollen mitosis appeared to be the most responsive. Modified Blaydes (B) (Blaydes, Physiol Plant., 19 (1966) 748) and Keller (K) (Keller et al., Can. J. Genet. Cytol., 17 (1975) 655) media supplemented with 6% or 9% sucrose (S), 15% coconut water (CW), 0.5% activated charcoal and 2 ppm naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), were found suitable for coconut pollen embryo formation. © 1983.
