Issue Date

Abstract

The study was conducted to test, describe, and asses the written English proficiency of selected UPLB freshmen in certain English areas. A total of 140 students from three (3) sections of English I lecture classes (totaling 504) were requested to participate in the study which employed a modified proficiency test from standardizes test of the English Division in UPLB and a survey questionnaire.

The study revealed the following: selected freshmen of UPLB at the entry level had a FAIR proficiency in the areas of grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, and paragraph writing and had a GOOD proficiency in reading comprehension. At the end of their English course, in both the lecture and recitation classes, the same students had a proficiency of FAIR in grammar and paragraph writing; POOR in vocabulary and sentence construction; and GOOD in reading comprehension.

The overall proficiency of the students in their lecture and recitation classes at the end of their English course were both rated as FAIR; while their general proficiency at the end of the English course was also FAIR.

An enhancement scheme is recommended for the handling of ENG 1 course as a result of the study.
