Community-based socioeconomic assessment and monitoring of activities related to National Forest Management in California

Issue Date

Abstract

Community-based assessment of socioeconomic conditions and monitoring the effects of National Forest activities can benefit both forest communities and government agencies. The Watershed Research and Training Center, a non-profit organization in Trinity County, California, working in cooperation with other local organizations, government agencies and the University of California, has been conducting socioeconomic assessments of Trinity County and its communities since 1994. In 1996, with funding from the United States Forest Service (USFS) Pacific Southwest Research Station and help from USFS personnel and the University of California, the Watershed Center began monitoring the local economic effects of the ecosystem management work done on the Trinity National Forest. This paper briefly summarizes key findings, important insights, and benefits resulting from these efforts.
