Biological control of Fusarium wilt of abaca (Fusarium Oxysporum) with Trichoderma and yeast
Issue Date
8-2005
Abstract
The potentials of Trichoderma viride and yeast as biological control agents against Fusarium oxysporum) f. sp. cubense associated with the Fusarium wilt of abaca was first evaluated in the laboratory by dual culture method, whereby the pathogen and each of the bioagents were co-inoculated in pairs over the agar surface 5 cm apart. Based on their ability to inhibit growth of the pathogen, Trichoderma and yeast (Davao isolate) were most antagonistic. Inoculation of potted abaca plants showed remarkable reduction of wilt disease severity in the antagonist-treated plants. Control of the disease provided by Trichoderma was 81.76% and by yeast 82.52% over the control treatment. Time of application did not significantly affect the efficacy of the bioagents in providing control of Fusarium wilt.
