Abstract
The distribution and dominance of paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) were assessed using reconnaissance and roadwalk survey and vegetation sampling in the vicinities of Mt. Makiling where it was first introduced.
The tree species is now widely distributed in at least 32 sites at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) campus standing singly or in clumps measuring from 25 m₂ to 1000 m₂. Paper mulberry has been observed in villages of Los Baños, Bay, Calamba and Calauan that surround Mt. Makiling. The farthest distance it has reached in Laguna province is in San Pablo City or about 30 km from Mt. Makiling.
Areas colonized by the species are open and abandoned backyards and farms, river and road sides. It was found to be dominant with an importance value (IV) of 49.5% and with 77.31% and 100% frequency in the two sampling sites for vegetation analysis.
