Abstract
'UPLB Sweet' is a seedling of mangosteen. It is the first mangosteen variety mangosteen variety registered (Registry No NSIC 2005 Mg 01; June 5, 2006) with the National Seed Industry Council of the Department of Agriculture. The tree of 'UPLB Sweet' mangosteen has a semi-spreading growth habit. In Laguna, 'UPLB Sweet' flowers early with fruits ready for harvesting from July to August. Average yield recorded during the last 3 fruiting reasons was 1,148 fruits. The ovate-shaped fruit of 'UPLB Sweet' mangosteen are small are small with an average weight of87 g. About 30 per cent of the fruit are seedless; other have only 1 or 2 small seeds. Fruit peel is smooth 7.5 mm thick and turns purple when ripe. The flesh, which constitutes about 29 per cent of the fruit weight, is snowy white , has mild aroma and is deliciously sweet, with soluble solid of 18.65 Brix. Titratable acidity of the flesh is only 9 me per 100 g sample. This variety responds very well to cleft grafting. The rootstocks should be at least 1 years old but preferably 2 years old. Orthotropic scions to be used should be at least 4 months old from flushing. Propagation using seeds is also advisable since mangosteen is an obligate apomict; however, start of fruiting is expecting to be delayed by about 5 years compared to grafted plants.
