Abstract
Halictophagus fulmeki (Hofeneder) (Strepsiptera: Hatictophagidae) and Callipharixenis philippines Kathirithamby & McMahon (Strepsiptera: Callipharixenidae) were found to parasitize the three (3) species of mango leafhoppers in the UPLB campus. The parasitjzation rate was 3.4% on ldioscopus clypealis, 0.26% on I. niveosparsus and 0.4% on Bakera nigrobilineata. The one-year survey was conducted in 2013. The male H. fulmeki exhibited monoparasitism and superparasitism on I. clypealis (Lethierry), and I. niveosparsus (Lethierry) but exhibited only monoparasjtism on B. nigrobitineata (Melichar). Meanwhite, the female H. fulmeki parasitized only I. clypealis and together with an unidentified female Halictophagus sp. multiparasitized I. clypealis. The female C. philippines parasitized I. niveosparsus alone or, together with male H. fulmeki. Superparasitism by female H. fulmeki on I. clypealis positively and strongly correlated with temperature, while superparasitism by the combined male and female H. fulmeki on female I. clypealis positively correlated with the density of hoppers. Monoparasitism by male H. fulmeki and by female C. philippines on male I. niveosparsus was also positively and strongly correlated with the density of hoppers. Temperature and flowering of mango trees exerted a positive influence on the population density of the two (2) species of Idioscopus, but had no effect on B. nigrobilineata. The parasitoids were initially collected in 1994 and have since been among the natural control factors that regulate MLH populations. How to enhance the level of parasitism by the parasitoids is an important research area to pursue.
