Abstract

Hived colonies of bees, Apis cerana, Apis mellifera and Tetragonula biroi were installed in the vicinity of Pagbilao Mangrove Swamp Experimental Forest to determine the melliferous plants in the area and assess the potential of beekeeping in mangrove ecosystem. Bee bread were collected from the combs of each species to analyze and identify the pollen grains present. A total of 49 plant species were foraged by the bees. Thirteen species are classified as mangrove namely; Luminitzera littorea, Morinda citrifolia, Aegiceras corniculatum, Aegiceras floridum, Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, Acanthus ilicifolius, Bruguiero gymnorrhiza, Terminalia catappa, Xylocarpus granatum, Instia retusa, Nypa fruticans, Excoecaria agallocha and Rhizophora mucronata. There was an overlap in the plant species visited by A. cerana, A. mellifera and T. biroi.
