Pollen sources of stingless bees and bloom pattern in selected meliponiaries in Bicol
Issue Date
10-2014
Abstract
Thirteen (13) meliponiaries found in the different provinces of Bicol were sampled to determine the pollen sources of the stingless bees and the bloom pattern in the area. Bee bread samples analyzed using acetolysis and melissopalynology techniques showed that the common pollen source of bees is coconut. Major pollen sources were horticultural and agronomic crops, forest trees and mangrove plant species. Stingless bees were found to be not host-specific and their floral preferences are diverse. Meliponiaries in the six provinces did not differ in the bloom patterns of their major plants which were mostly in bloom from December to February except for some trees which were at the flowering stage only starting January.
