Abstract

Hoya or wax plant is gaining popularity in the country as an ornamental plant. This group of plant is fancied by local and foreign plant collectors because of uniqueness of the flowers. The inflorescence is umbel type composed of star-shaped florets in varying sizes, shapes, colors and scents. The Institute of Plant Breeding, Crop Science Cluster, UPLB [Philippines Univ. Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines], holds an extensive germplasm collection of indigenous hoya species. These plants are being maintained in the screenhouse and noted to be attacked by insect pests. The major insect pest observed was the yellow aphid or milkweed aphid, Aphis nervii Boyer de Fonscolombe. The different species of hoya were evaluated for their reaction to the milkweed aphid. Some of these indigenous hoyas were preferred as observed by the heavy infestation of the aphids on the plants. Selected hoya species showing resistance to the insect include Hoya madulidii, Hoya carnosa variegata and Hoya obscura. The mechanism of resistance to this insect pest is being elucidated.
