Surveillance of invasive alien insect pest (IAIP) for biodiversity protection at Mt. Makiling

Issue Date

10-2014

Abstract

The surveillance of Invasive Alien Insect Pests (IAIP) at Mt. Makiling was done through cooperative endeavor among stakeholders and on site observation from August 2013 to date. It is important to determine the impact of IAIPs on the overall health of the forest due to the close proximity of agro-ecosystem where most IAIP's were initially detected. There were 22 sites in and around Mt. Makiling in the municipalities of Los Baand Bay, Laguna and in the cities of Calamba, Laguna and Sto. Tomas, Batangas that were covered. Awareness campaigns were hold in coordination with the local government units (LGUs). Farmer interviews, visual monitoring and photo documentation were also done. Insect trapping on selected agricultural and buffer zone areas were accomplished. The presence of the mussel scale (Lepidopsaphes sp.) on Lanzones, Guyabano, Citrus and Papaya, Coconut Scale Insect (Aspidiotus destructor Signoret) on Coconut and Mangosteen, and Buff Mealybugs (Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell) on Banana, Mangosteen, Avocado, Citrus and Guava were noted. Leaf miners were also observed on sweet potato, rattan and other forest vegetations especially on plant species under Family Araceae.
