Survey of fireflies (Coleoptera:Lampyridae) on the different elevational gradients in Mount Makiling
Issue Date

Abstract
Mount Makiling is considered as the Philippines biodiversity center since its proclamation as a forest reserve in 1910. It has a diverse array of flora and fauna with approximately 7,000 insect species. Among these, fireflies are commonly observed which are considered fascinating due to their bioluminescent flashing. In the Philippines, fireflies have made a significant mark not only for habitat conservation but also for ecological tourism despite the limited information about these insects. Firefly specimens were identified using available published keys and literature. Using GPS, elevations were recorded where fireflies were collected. Data showed that the elevations recorded range from 50 to 1500 m above sea level (asl). The numbers of individuals and species of fireflies collected and observed were highest at 50-750 m asl while lowest at 751-1500 m asl. Nonetheless, a list of firefly species and their observed abundance are provided.
