Dipteran insects in bulb onion : occurrence and the effect of Jatropha curcas L. press-cake extract

Issue Date

Abstract

Two studies were conducted to determine the dipteran insect pests present in bulb onion and to assess the effect of Jatropha curcas L. press-cake extract. A total of eight species of Dipteran insects were collected and examined namely: Liriomyza trifolii, L. cepae, L. huidobrensis, Liriomyza sp.1, Agromyzid sp.1, Delia sp.1, Musca domestica, and Calliphora sp. Seven species were present in Study 1 and an additional species Liriomyza sp.1 was found in Study 2. Liriomyza trifolii was the most common and abundant. This assessment of the effects of J. curcas L. press-cake extract on Dipteran insects in onion revealed that cumulative number of Dipteran insects treated plots with press-cake extracts and water was significantly lower compared to that in untreated plots except for L. trifolii which was not significantly different in all treatments. The extract appears to have a repellant action that decreases with time after application.
