Identification of the Aedes species complex using the morphological characters of adult mosquitoes
Issue Date
10-2014
Abstract
Lawanit paddles with mosquito eggs were collected from school study sites by the project personnel of a PCHRD-funded project of VRO fro 23 July to 23 December 2013. After the paddles were examined for presence of Aedes eggs by the project staff, the paddles were sent to the senior author as source of test insects for bioassay research for her graduate thesis. Paddles with eggs were pooled per school and allowed to hatch under laboratory conditions at BASF Agricultural Research Station. Larvae were reared until emergence of adult mosquitoes, which were subsequently identified through their morphological characters. Ae. aegypti was found present in paddles from all the 56 public schools, whereas Ae. albopictus was collected only in 49 schools. The procedures for rearing the mosquitoes and identifying the species were detailed.
