Overview of the rapid tests for the detection of pesticide residues
Issue Date

Abstract
There is a need to have a tool to assess rapidly the pesticide residues for immediate decision on pre- and post-harvest pesticide residues. The rapid test kit (RTK) developed at NCPC is a colorimetric test which has been found useful by agricultural technicians, classical and organic farmer groups, LGUs and students/researchers as tool in their studies. The Rapid Bioassay for Pesticide Residues (RBPR) is based on the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase by organophosphate (OPs) and carbamates (CBMs). It was developed by the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) and was studied by students, researchers, and a number of LGUs for its applicability under Philippine conditions. Results of monitoring using RTK and RBPR are presented. Other newer rapid detection methods like dipsticks, electrochemical bioassay, fluorescence probe, membrane chips and screening cards are discussed.
