What matters most? - the need for reconsideration of dermal structures used in differentiating Aspidiotus species
Issue Date

Abstract
Among the characters used to differentiate Aspidiotus rigidus Reyne from typical A. destructor Signoret, the sclerotization of the pre-pygidial region was emphasized. The intersegmented lines between the prepygidial abdominal segments remained membranous such that the derm of the adult female presents a ladder-like stain pattern in A. rigidus but not in A. destructor. The number and pattern of perivulvar pores were not considered important although these characters proved useful in differentiating the recently described Unaspis mabilis Lit and Barbecho (=U. lansivora Watson) from the more common U. citri. The consistency of dermal sclerotization needs to be further evaluated as a character. As well, the importance of other dermal structures, including the perivulvar pores, macroducts, spiracular pores and fringes need to be reconsidered. This is especially needed in the light of detection of mixed colonies and inconsistent results obtained for morphological vis-à-vis molecular data.
